The most recognized historic landmark is Merrehope House, which is a Victorian mansion that was completed in 1858. The home changed hands by 1904, when it was used as headquarters by Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston. The home was one of the few spared by the North. Prior to becoming a historic landmark, it was an apartment building and a boarding house.
